How would you described Maunakea Scholars?
Maunakea Scholars is an amazing program that gives Hawai’i high school students access to world-class telescopes. Students come up with their own project ideas, which allows them to pursue their interests, and are helped by a mentor to turn that idea into a telescope proposal. Going through the same process as astronomers around world, to use the same telescopes, they get first-hand experience in what it is to do research in astronomy. Through this program, students not only learn about astronomy, but also important skills such as writing a science proposal, collecting and analyzing data, and presenting results. As a mentor, it is extremely rewarding seeing the excitement in the students and I am always amazed by their project ideas, full of curiosity and creativity.
